The issue

GLENRAC is exploring new ways to engage women in natural resource management activities. Traditionally women are under-represented as committee of management members of GLENRAC and as participants at GLENRAC events. GLENRAC recognises the important role women play in the farming families across our district and we would like to provide support for rural women to participate more actively in natural resource management and community leadership.

The solution

GLENRAC is exploring new methods to engage with rural women including running events targeting rural women, running events during the evening or on weekends to attract women who work off-farm during the week. In 2016, an event run over a weekend resulted in the formation of a new interest group for rural women, Land Girls.  The Fabulous Rural Women's Day was one of the strategies GLENRAC has adopted to engage more rural women to our activities. In 2016, this event received financial supported from the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal's Tackling Tough Times Together programme. In addition, our presenters provided a significant discount on their professional fees and participants were asked to bring a plate to share for morning tea.

The impact

The Fabulous Rural Women's Day was hosted on Saturday 15th October 2016. This event attracted 26 participants, many of whom were attending a GLENRAC event for the first time. This event was free to attend and featured presentations from two keynote speakers, Kate Blackmore and Jan Bavea, who covered topics relating to personal development. This event was fun and informative and as a result we have new members to both Land Girls and GLENRAC.
